My ultimate trip? That’s a tricky one. All of the travels I’ve been on so far each have experiences and stories that I’d want in my “ultimate trip” so it’s hard to choose. I think that wherever you are in the world you can have an amazing adventure, and that travelling is what you make of it. There are some amazingly beautiful places in our world and I’ve been lucky enough to see a few of them. The sun setting across Halong Bay in Vietnam would definitely make my ultimate list, as would getting drenched by the spray of Niagara Falls or paddling in the clear blue sea of a deserted beach in Cartaghena, Colombia. The people I’ve met along the way are also an important part of my happy memories. Irish Ainé in Sydney when I was 18 and homesick, who showed me how much of that amazing city I still had to discover. Juan-Fé who taught me to dance to merengue music in Medellin. And Marcus, who showed me where to buy a cheap beer in Krakow and helped me drink far too many! My ultimate adventure would combine the partying I did in Australia with the making a difference of volunteering in Vietnam. It would be the time spent alone with just my own thoughts but also time spent meeting new friends and building memories with them. It would be the luxury of a far flung relative’s spare room as well as the noisy, smelly 16 bed room in a hostel. It would be the angry tears when nothing seems to be going my way and the euphoric highs when it hits you that wow, this is amazing.
My point is that it’s not where you are that makes the ultimate trip, or even who you’re there with. It’s what you make of it, and the memories you take away. My ultimate trip doesn’t have a perfect itiniary or a set list of must sees or must dos. It’s perfect in that it’s unknown, an adventure waiting to happen that I can’t imagine yet, let alone describe. And I can’t wait.
