Hi all,
Your travel tips and advice are needed. I'm going on a one week volunteer project in March. I'll be volunteering in March and then getting the overland train to Nairobi and then hopefully doing some more volunteering or visting lots of exciting places in the space of a week.
Has anyone been recently and has any gems for me? Places to go, people to see, things to do?
I like the idea of the overnight train, has anyone done this and can tell me more or if there is a better way of getting to Nairobi?

Hiya!!
I'm actually doing a volunteer project in March as well in Mombasa. Slightly terrified as I've never really done anything like it before but I'm also ridiculously excited...
So yeah, I've been doing a lot of research about the place. I'm definitely going to see Fort Jesus, although I'm told it's very touristy these days. Other than that I'm looking forward to going with the flow and seeing what I can find to do and see. Things like street vendors and watching the sun go down you can't really plan for, y'know?
I'm also travelling from Mombasa to Nairobi at the end of my five weeks, so you'll have to let me know which method of transport you decided on and whether it was worth it :)
Hi Katie,
"The Man in Seat 61" is always an excellent site if you need to know anything about trains...
"Kenya Railways provides the classic and very enjoyable way to travel between Nairobi and Mombasa. Indeed, spotting big game from the Nairobi-Mombasa night express has always been one of Kenya's great travel experiences, so make sure you factor the train journey into your itinerary."

I wonder what big game sights can be expected from the window of the Horsforth to Leeds train?
"Ladies and gentlemen, if you take a look out of your left hand window you'll see the common house cat on top of a wall... and quick, if you look into the distance, you may just see an urban fox rummaging through the bins of local residents."
Mombassa is such a great location you could stay there months! Make sure you try the Yam chips (purchase from the local street vendors) and enjoy some coconut juice too! There's plenty of vendor's selling these along the beachfront. I MISS THEM....!
Just about - depends where you starting from and if you're prepared to fly! By plane (small strip just over on the mailand) then no problems, if you're heading by bus then best factor in a day from Mombasa to Lamu and a day back/ However, make the time - it really is a great place to hang out and don't miss out on heading inland a bit - lots of little camps and settlements.
Thanks Bruce, sounds great. Do you think I have enough time to get there over a long weekend?
Don't miss out on Lamu - one of the best island / beach locations anywhere in Africa. Great people, stunning architecture, brilliant beaches and somewhere you can easily stay for weeks. Went for 10 days and ended up being there for 8 weeks! Drinks on the rooftop at Petleys as the sun goes down - perfect
