Week 4

A fabulous weekend spent at the Iguazu Falls. The Iguazu national park is outstanding and the way they have set up the viewing points for the falls is fantastic. There are lower and higher trails and all I can say is that you have an expectation about what the falls might be ike, but they are so magnificent they completely astound you by their sheer size. At some points you can literally stand under 100ft high waterfalls and get soaked if you want to. The piece de resistance though is ' The Devils Throat' . You have to walk for 0.75 of a mile across a bridge suspended across the river but when you reach the end you are at the top of the waterfalls as they crash down hundreds of feet below, again you get covered in mist and spray but its well worth it. You can also get boat trips, but we decided to get a trip into the jungle for a couple of hours. Unfortunately, we didnt see any wildlife except for the coatis at the falls who were after everyones bags for food.

The weather has been very cloudy since Sunday, though still humidand last night there was the most terrific storm. When it rains here it rains with a vengeance. When I arrived at the orphanage this morning the girls were trying to unblock the drains as I think a load of debris was washed into them overnight. The new television is now in place and the fridge freezer has arrived ready to be installed.

I am using the remaining donaton funds on treats for the children and yesterday we took the three oldest children for lunch and then a spell at the internet cafe, drinks etc. Today, we are taking 7 children to the pictures, though whether I can face another bout of Alvin and the Chipmunks remains to be seen. Its either that or Sherlock Holmes in Spanish so whichever, I'll be just as confused as when I went in although if its the Chipmunks I should now be able to work out the extremely complex plot after a second showing.

Most of the children have recovered from chickenpox although lice is still apparent as some of the kids take turns in picking it out of each others hair. There are much more kids around although what seems strange is you turn up one morning and there is a new child there. Perhaps, like our social services kids are taking into care quickly for their own protection.

So, only two more days left at the orphanage, Im sure it will be sad to leave the children behind particulalrly as now Im starting to become attached to some of them. My shoulders though will be glad of the rest as they are sore from all the caballitos. I had a massage yesterday to loosen them up a bit, good value for less than a tenner ( and no it didnt have a happy ending).

I am looking forward however to my final week and have the final 8 days planned out roughly including a weekend stay in the most charming town of Colonia Del Sacramento in Uruguay which is supposed to be magical and similar in style to Havana, Cuba with vintage cars, cobbled streets and an olde worlde feel. For this I'll need to take a ferry across the River Plate from Buenos Aires.

Will update again on my final day at the orphanage.
