Week Two

I returned to the city from San Ignacio yesterday afternoon. It was a bit cooler away from the city and there was a nice breeze but back to the humidity now. The forecast for the rest of the week is expected to be between 34 -37C.

They dont seem to have a problem with breast feeding in public here as the lady next to me on the bus demonstrated yesterday. Little Britain sprang to mind but I resisted the temptation for some 'Bitty', despite my thirst. The transport system here is great. No need to plan ahead, just turn up at the bus station and there are countless companies vying for business and buses leaving every few minutes. Next weekend I am hoping to go to the Iguazu Falls, the mighty waterfalls conjoining Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Will probably leave Friday lunchtime and return Sunday evening. Its a five hour bus ride each way but by all accounts well worth it. This country is so vast that most people travel by coach, but the domestic airport was also extremely busy so plane is also another easy way of getting around this huge country.

I had that Monday morning feeling this morning, more to do with lethargy caused by the heat than anything else as I again woke drenched in sweat despite a ceiling fan being on all night. Back to the orphanage and it seems that the open drains now have covers on them although Walter did his best to remove all of them until I put them all back again. Walter really needs 1:1 attention. I havent taken any photos yet of the children as have been reluctant to take my camera in to the orphanage. The children will want to play with it but I cant leave here without taking some photos of the children so will do soon. Not sure if I will be able to load onto blog until I come home as dont have the facilities where I live and not sure if can be done at internet cafe. Facundo, was found with a hand made knife this morning. Not sure if he would have used it but if used in retaliation could have seriously injured someone, or worse. Matt confiscated it , as well as a rusty nail. Sometimes the kids can be quite violent to each other. I think they can get quite frustrated as it appears to me that they are mostly confined to 'El Refugio' which is a small confined space at best. When we are in the back yard we can give some 'caballitos´, (piggybacks), but we cant go far and have to dodge the lines of washing, the large puddles of water and the cracks in the ground. Im not sure that the staff are best pleased when some of the washing falls off the lines as we run through/around them.

Ive learnt some key phrases not normally found in your average tourist phrase book. No escupir ( No spitting), Tomatelo con calma ( Take it easy), No molestes a ........ ( Dont bother .........), Parar de pelear ( Stop fighting), Queidado ( Careful), but still struggle a bit with the language. I can usually ask for what I want but then not be able to understand all of the reply. I think I need an intensive course which I might consider when I return.

So time is passing quickly, though I still have more than a month before I return to work. Ive been in Argentina now 11 days. Im really enjoying the afternoons relaxing. I cant really be bothered with a siesta as I dont feel tired enough to sleep so drink coffee and read before returning to my 'digs' in the evening, oh and go to the internet cafe.

I think Argentina is a lovely country. Posadas is surrounded by green fields and water, you could almost be in England if not for the weather. Soon, I will have to look into my plans for returning to Buenos Aires. Some volunteers are leaving on the same day as me and are thinking of taking the overnight luxury sleeper. I think I might fly back as its 12 hours on the coach and Id prefer to maximise my time in Buenos Aires. Flight only takes 90 mins.

Two more volunteers left at the weekend and 3 more leave on Friday. That will leave just me, Mitzu and Andrew. We discussed today about dipping into the donations fund next week to maybe buy some useful things to keep the kids occupied. Not toys, because they will be broken but perhaps sketchbooks, art materials etc but am sure we will discuss further.

Now lets get back to relaxing and reading.................

Hi Pat, not sure what happens at weekends but would think same staff on duty, some probably live there all the time. You´d like the office jobs here, no computer, no paperwork, no Support Plans. Theres a vacancy if you want it.

Hi Michael,
loving the BLOG ,really enjoying your unfolding tale and warming to Walter. Who looks after the kids at weekends, central control?
UK is cold & damp with a tiny bit of sunshine, so more searing temperatures and beautiful vistas please.
looking forward to the kids reactions to crayons, paper ect. Is it too hot for crayons?
Keep it coming.
Take care & mind those drains.

Well while your enjoying yourself, some of us have to work.

We have to endure difficult conditions, rain, frost, ice .....temperature variations -5 to 5. Its tuff here in the UK...but you will be back soon enough to suffer with the rest of us!

You take care.
