Hello fellow traveler!
At the moment I am in the very, very initial stage of planning my gap year. Its quite difficult actually juggling revision, coursework, and planning the next year of my life.
My main difficulty is choosing projects. There is just so much CHOICE! One minute I'm reading about a conservation project in Australia and thinking 'this is the project for me!' and then I turn the page and there's an equally amazing project in Sri Lanka. Its impossible! I can't even decide on the country let alone the project.
At least I most definetly know that it has to be conservation. And I have actually already booked a 10 week trip to Borneo with another company. It's 3 weeks helping a community project, 3 weeks helping a conservation project, and 3 weeks treking through the jungle. I know thats only 9 weeks, but I think the extra week is taken up with travel.
Another problem is my freinds. Last year they all said that they would come on a gap year with me, but none of the ones going to uni are differing entry so they can't come. TRAITORS!
The two that aren't going to uni are saying that they'll come though. However I don't think they will. They keep turning down all the good projects I find for us. They say they want to do horse riding so I find us a project were you heard cattle in Australia (and get paid!) and they said that they wanted more freedom than a fixed job. Then I found some conservation projects where you can ride on the weekends but they said they want to get paid. I can't win!
Also they keep moaning about the prices. They have no concept of money; I mean these projects include food and board at a very reasonable prices, but my freinds think they are over priced! I think that in their dream world that they can just buy a plane ticket to Australia and get a paid job with enough pay to feed them and than move on after a week or two to somewhere else. They'd never get a job; they've got no qualifications.
Oh well. I'll probably just have to have all the fun by myself and make new freinds. :)
All I have to do now is plan at least two more 10 week trips and find the money to get me there. Ah well, I've got at least 6 months.
Sara

I'm not sure I think i would like to experience the country as well, but I'm not sure what to do? (And I'm sorry I only just replied, but I just finished my A-Levels :) )
Hey, im in exactly the same position, in the very initial stages of planning my gap year, i have no idea where to start really, so confusing haha xx Are you planning on doing voluntree work every where you go, or planning to experiance something else? I would love to go and do some voluntree work but I want to really get out and see the country and maybe participate in something else too, but im not sure what x
Thanks Christy that advice was really help-ful! And if I get any problems I will definetly e-mail you. :)
Hey Sara
Yeah it is always tough trying to organise travelling with friends and making everyone happy... So let me know help you out with some ideas - you can definitely travel on your own, you will meet some amazing people and actually make a lot of friends from other countries. It is daunting at first but once you arrive and are settled in you will be glad you did it! If you don't book the travel, then it won't happen so just go ahead and do it... they will either decide to go with you (and book it themselves) or they will not bother, but at least you will have done what you wanted!
Now I live in Australia and the volunteering that you were thinking of doing sounds amazing! But yeah, so many other countries and so many other volunteering things also sound amazing!
I did some volunteering in South Africa last year - worked with animals over there and it was wonderful... so if you want to chat to me more about it, please email me at christy_rossi@hotmail.com and I will be glad to give your more advice and help with any questions you may have! :)
Hope to talk to you soon!
