Am I a TEFL Teacher
At i-to-i, we believe you never stop learning. So in essence we’re all students in this global classroom and we always will be. That said, if you are craving more knowledge and feel like you might be able to share some of your own with a community of interested souls, teaching English abroad could be just what you’re after.
Before making the decision to teach english abroad, there are some seriously important questions you should ask yourself.
- Do you like kids (and potentially very big kids)?
Your students will be anywhere between the ages of 4 and 84. That means you can expect sticky fingers, raucous behaviour or even obedient business men. The chances are that you’ll be spending all day surrounded by curious children and that will be absolute hell if you don’t like kids! You can look for a position teaching adults but whatever you choose, a sense of patience will always be essential. - Do you enjoy a challenge?
Make no mistake, this will be a challenge in every aspect of the word. - Are you passionate, imaginative and lively?
Teaching will push the boundaries of your creativity more than any other profession. You’ll be presented with challenges of a nature you’ve never encountered before, and chances are, they will be in a different language. While this may sound intimidating, it is for many people the most enjoyable and gratifying part of the work. - Are you committed?
As a teacher, you are essentially changing people’s lives. Seeing a job through is integral to each and every teaching assignment. These students are relying on you for the betterment of their lives as well as the lives of their families and their communities. The skills you give to one student will ripple through the community at large, making a difference to the lives of not just one person, but many. - Are you excited?
You should be! This will be the experience of a lifetime.
