Criminal Record Checks

We require anyone who is working directly with children to have a police check before they travel. Therefore, we'll make contact with you after booking to request a police check for all relevant projects. You will also see which trips require a police check on the website.

Why do we do it?

We run over 500 projects in five continents and a lot of these involve working with children or vulnerable people. As a volunteer travel provider we have a responsibility to protect these individuals from unsuitable or objectionable volunteers.

Checks by country

We are able to assist with police checks for those people travelling from UK, Australia and New Zealand. For all other destinations we will ask you to make contact with your local police to obtain the check directly from them.

Criminal Records Checks in the UK

How do you do it and how much does it cost?

In the UK you can’t apply for a CRB check for yourself, you have to do it through us. The advantage of this is that it cuts your work in half. You’ll be sent a CRB application form in your welcome pack. All you have to do is return your completed form to us and we’ll do the rest! Because you’re volunteering your Criminal Records Check will be absolutely free.

What information is available from the CRB Disclosures service?

The CRB's Disclosure service provides access to a range of different types of information including:

Who will have access to my information?

One copy of your disclosure (ie. the results of your criminal record check) will be sent to i-to-i and the other will be sent to you. What is revealed in your disclosure will remain completely confidential.

All organisations using the Disclosure service must comply with the CRB Code of Practice. This is designed to ensure that any information revealed is treated fairly and securely. To view this document you will need Adobe's Acrobat software. If you do not already have it, please click here to download and install it.

What if I have a criminal record that isn’t relevant to my application to the project?

Ex-offenders are protected by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. The CRB and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have developed guidance information for employers which i-to-i meticulously follows.
